Samsung on Thursday officially announced the second version of its Android-powered Galaxy Camera, properly dubbed the “Galaxy Camera 2.” The device functions just like the original, though offers new hardware that should improve the overall experience.

Samsung’s focus was also on the new design of the Galaxy Camera 2, which it calls “retro.” The camera is lighter than the Galaxy Camera at 9.9 ounces and features a much more compact industrial build. The Galaxy Camera 2 has a 16.3 megapixel sensor, the same megapixel count found on the original Galaxy Camera, and still offers 21x optical zoom. However, it runs a newer version of Android (Android 4.3 Jelly Bean) and is equipped with a 1.6GHz quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 8GB of storage that’s expandable using a microSD card slot and a large 2,000mAh battery. It also has a 4.8-inch Super Clear Touch HD display, which should make viewing the screen outdoors easier than on an AMOLED screen.

Samsung did not announce pricing or a release date, though we expect it will land on a few carriers in the United States as the first version did. It will be on display during CES 2014, and we’ll be sure to check it out to bring you our first impressions.
